Nick Kyrgios reportedly clashed with fans, threw a water bottle onto the court and obliterated two rackets after throwing a tantrum following his defeat in the US Open.

Karen Khachanov won 7-5, 4-6, 7-5, 7-6 (3), 6-4 in a late-night thriller in the tournament to set up a clash against Casper Ruud. However, Kyrgios did not take the loss well and lost his temper after shaking hands with his opponent and the umpire.

The Australian then flew straight into a fit of fury, smashing his racket onto the floor which drew gasps from the crowd. He then took a second out of his kit bag and proceeded the do the same.

According to The Sun, the outburst did not stop there as he threw a water bottle onto the court before clashing with rowdy fans. It is just the latest controversy in the 27-year-old's tennis career, who had stated prior to the quarter-finals that he was thinking about retiring.

"It's the last biggest tournament of the year," said the 27-year-old after knocking world No1 and US Open holder Daniil Medvedev. "We've got to try and just tough it out and keep pushing each other, keep being positive.

"Next week we're going home. But three more matches potentially, then we never have to play tennis again.

"It's a great win. But I come off the court and I'm just almost relieved that it's over because there's just so much pressure every time I go out on court, so much expectation, so much unpredictability of what I can do."

Whether Kyrgios follows through with his promise remains to be seen, though he did produce some tough moments against Khachanov. From a set down, he forced a deciding fifth set on Arthur Ashe Stadium before eventually losing.
