Jon Jones has taken to Twitter to congratulate Alex Pereira on becoming the new UFC middleweight champion following his TKO win over Israel Adesanya. 

Pereira stopped Adesanya via TKO after 2 minutes and 1 second in the fifth round of the main event at Madison Square Garden on Saturday evening.

Jones said he was ‘incredibly happy’ for Pereira and his team. While Francis Ngannou Tweeted saying it was a ‘sad night’ in New York as Adesanya lost his sixth title defence.

Jones took to Twitter after the fight to say: ‘It’s already yours Champ, Congratulations! Incredibly happy for you and your team.’

While Ngannou – who recently confirmed he could fight Jones on his return to the Octagon – wrote: ‘What a sad night’ with a crying face emoji.

The Tweets took place after Pereira beat Adesanya during on Saturday night at Maddison Squad Garden. 

It looked as though Adesanya was on track to successfully defend his title and avenge two previous kickboxing losses to Pereira after four rounds. 

However, that changed when Pereira unleashed a flurry of punches to earn a fifth-round TKO win over Adesanya. 

As a result, Pereira is now the promotion’s undisputed middleweight champion after just four professional fights.
