Tyson Fury has revealed he sat in his hotel enjoying a beer just 24 hours before his first fight with Deontay Wilder, which resulted in a controversial split draw decision despite many feeling the Gypsy King had done enough for victory.
Since then the pair have met again where Fury was finally able to secure his win, as he defeated his arch rival in February 2020 thanks to a technical knockout in round seven after the Wilder camp had thrown in the towel.
The pair will face off once again this weekend in their third, and what is expected to be their final fight with the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas playing host to the eagerly anticipated heavyweight bout.
Ahead of the trilogy fight, the Englishman has admitted he enjoyed a beer or two in preparation for their original meeting three years ago.
In a video posted on Twitter Fury comments: “I’ll tell you guys something that you probably don’t know. When I was boxing Deontay Wilder in Los Angeles in 2018 it was the night before the fight.

“I had this urge to go downstairs and have a beer. So I thought – you know what – I’m fighting for the heavyweight championship of the world, my body is telling me I want a beer, I’m going to have one.”
Many would say this isn’t the ideal preparation when heading into a world championship bout, and it even took the surprise of a member of Fury’s team who could not believe what the Gypsy King told him, when asking to meet at the hotel bar the night before the fight.
He added: “So I called up my buddy who organises these things, Tim and I said ‘Tim meet me downstairs in five minutes at the bar, he said ‘what?’. I said ‘meet me downstairs in five minutes!”
“So I go downstairs and get two beers, one for me and for my buddy Tim and he says ‘what are you doing? You’re fighting for the heavyweight championship of the world… tomorrow night!’”

Despite his team’s shock, the Englishman went on to add that the ‘old time greats’ from the boxing world used to enjoy a drink at the bar before their major bouts, so he wanted to join the craze too.
He said: “I was like ‘listen the old time greats used to get brandies and get absolutely sackless drunk before championship fights’ so I thought if I can’t have a beer I’ll be right.
“So I ended up having a beer, felt good, went to bed, got an early night and I felt great the next day and I put up a good fight.”
Whilst Fury did not go on to win following the split draw decision, many feel the Manchester-born was by far the superior fighter throughout the fight, no more so than the Gypsy King’s promoter Frank Warren.
Immediately after the 2018 bout he said: “I thought he [Fury] won it by at least three rounds. Obviously there were knockdowns, and we know what knockdowns mean but when you think where he has come from to get to here…
“It was a tremendous performance and how that judge gave it the way he gave it I do not know, terrible.”
Of course Fury went all the way in the pair’s rematch just over a year later, and will no doubt be eying another victory when he takes on the Bronze Bomber again this weekend.
