UFC’s Joanna Jedrzejczyk targeting return two years after being left disfigured

UFC star Joanna Jedrzejczyk is targeting a return to the octagon against Zhang Weili, two years after being left disfigured by the former Women's Strawweight champion.

Jedrzejczyk looked almost unrecognisable following her UFC 248 defeat to Zhang in March 2020.

The Polish fighter had to be taken to hospital for her injuries, which left her face looking battered, bruised and completely out of proportion.

Her most brutal injury was on her forehead, having sustained a horrific-looking hematoma, which altered her whole complexion.

But almost two years on from her last fight, Jedrzejczyk is now ready do battle once again – and she's set her sights on a potential rematch with Zhang.

"Everyone thinks I'm not in the UFC any more – I am," the 34-year-old told Polish TV show Kanal Sportowy.

"I just dropped out of the rankings, because I haven't fought for a dozen or so months."

It wasn't all that long ago that Jedrzejczyk, who turns 35 in August, was virtually unstoppable in the strawweight division.

But since suffering the first defeat of her career and relinquishing her title to current champion Rose Namajunas in 2017, the Polish superstar has struggled, losing four of her last six fights.

The last of those defeats came against Zhang in 2020, but with the Chinese star now in need of a fight after back-to-back defeats to Namajunas in 2021, the door is open to a rematch with Jedrzejczyk.

"I thought it might be Carla Esparza, but it's been confirmed she is next to fight for the championship," she said.

"There was also [Maria] Rodriguez, but she fights [Xiaonan] Yan in March so that leaves Weili.

"I don't see any other fight. [UFC president] Dana [White] made me an offer to fight for the championship, but I would have to wait until November [or] December and I don't want to wait. I want to fight."

Zhang's victory over Jedrzejczyk two years ago is widely considered one of the greatest women's MMA fights in UFC history.

Fans will be hoping for more of the same if a rematch gets the go-ahead for 2022.
