Another injury blow for the Brisbane Lions

Brisbane’s injury woes continue, with in-form Lions defender Marcus Adams to miss at least a month of football with a recurrence of a foot problem.

Adams has been in career-best form this season after being restricted to just one match last year because of a foot injury.

But the 28-year-old former Western Bulldog is now facing four to six weeks on the sidelines after developing a stress reaction in his right foot in Brisbane’s 32-point weekend loss to St Kilda.

It’s news the Lions don’t need after the loss of key forward Eric Hipwood for at least 10 months with a torn ACL, an injury he suffered also in the loss to the Saints at Metricon Stadium.

“Marcus felt some discomfort after the St Kilda game and an investigation has shown evidence of a stress reaction,’’ Lions high performance manager Damien Austin said.

“We’re confident he can return and make a contribution for us this season.”

Adams will spend the next week in a moon boot before starting rehabilitation training.

His likely replacement in Brisbane’s line-up for Friday night’s clash against Richmond at the MCG is experienced defender Ryan Lester.

Having been sidelined with a hamstring injury, Lester returned to action last Saturday for the Lions’ VFL team in its embarrassing 109-point loss to the Southport Sharks.

Tom Fullarton looms as Hipwood’s replacement, with Connor Ballenden also in contention if he can overcome a hamstring injury he suffered against the Sharks.

Lions VFL coach Mitch Hahn said: “Now that there’s a spot to be filled in the 22, some of the guys have got to put their hand up and it’s unfortunate for Connor. Hopefully, it’s not too bad and is only a one-week injury at most.”

In other Lions injury news, midfielder Jarrod Berry is set miss another week with a calf injury, but defender Brandon Starcevich is expected to play on Friday night despite hurting his neck against the Saints.
