Relationship status: It’s complicated.
Packers president Mark Murphy recently said that the situation between Aaron Rodgers and the Packers has divided the fan base, and his comments on Rodgers over the the last week certainly haven’t helped matters.
Speaking at a recent event at Lambeau Field, Murphy recalled words of wisdom that were shared by former Packers GM Ted Thompson and Rodgers’ unique personality (via NBC26). Rodgers is a “complicated” dude:
“I’m often reminded though, of Ted Thompson, as most of you know, just a great general manager, passed away (earlier this year),” Murphy said. “(Thompson) often talked about Aaron, that he’s a — and it wasn’t just Aaron, a lot of different players — he would say ‘He’s a complicated fella.’ So I’ll just say that.”
Confusingly, Murphy recently said that the less that’s said in public about the situation with Rodgers, the better:
“We are working to resolve the situation and realize that the less both sides say publicly, the better,” he recently wrote.
The reigning MVP hasn’t reported to Packers mandatory minicamp and sat out OTAs, as well. There’s been no word on how close, if close at all, the situation between the two sides is to a resolution.
Rodgers’ issues with the Packers are without concrete reasoning; Some reports indicate that he’s dissatisfied with his contract situation, GM Brian Gutekunst and/or the team’s lack of respect and drafting his replacement in 2020.
Murphy, though, has offered a vote of confidence for Gutekunst, meaning that Rodgers’ reported desire to have Gutekunst removed may not be satiated. Murphy has also said that he wants Rodgers to be the team’s signal caller for 2021 and beyond.
But Murphy’s recent words may cast a little doubt to whether or not that’s actually the case.
