F1 podium blunder spotted by eagle-eyed fans at Dutch Grand Prix

Lewis Hamilton shows off his impressive surfing skills

Eagle-eyed F1 fans were quick to spot an embarrassing blunder during the post-race celebrations at the Dutch Grand Prix. Max Verstappen won his ninth straight race at Zandvoort, with Fernando Alonso and Pierre Gasly coming home in second and third respectively.

Gasly managed to squeeze into the top three after Sergio Perez, who crossed the finish line in third, was handed a five-second penalty for speeding in the pit lane. The Frenchman was clearly delighted with the result as he whooped over the radio before joining the podium celebrations after the chequered flag.

His entry onto the podium was marked by an embarrassing mistake from Dutch Grand Prix organisers, who displayed the wrong name on the huge LED screen. Esteban Ocon’s name flashed up as Gasly walked out to soak up the applause in a case of mistaken identity between the two French drivers.

Fans on Reddit were quick to poke fun at the blunder, with FaceMaskYT posting: “The French Alpine driver… wait… no, not that one.” Meanwhile, torrenceb pointed out: “They did the same in the cool down room. Under the big ‘Pierre Gasly’, Ocon was sliding across the bottom of the screen behind his chair.”

“Awwww. Sucks for Pierre. Such a great drive from him today,” said Timelordvictorious1, while PCI_STAT joked: “Incoming penalty to Ocon for improperly appearing on the podium.”

Gasly did not appear to notice the mistake and was certainly not disheartened by it as he revelled in the post-race celebrations. The result marked his first podium appearance in two years and he made sure to thank the entire Alpine team in the media pen afterwards.

“It’s very satisfying when you get a reward for the work we’ve put in as a team,” he said. “This year we’ve come close in Monaco. Running third, it was clearly a missed opportunity with the extra stop which wasn’t necessary.

“But it’s a sort of season where you’ve just got to keep trying again, and you’re going to be at a point where things finally click. I’m really pleased and proud of the team because we haven’t been fortunate, but you’ve got to keep trying and keep looking at yourself, seeing the areas where you can improve.

“I hope we can build up from there with the guys. Today was probably the most challenging race of the year, there were many moments where you could have got it wrong, but as a team we just tried to maximise.”
