Lewis Hamilton has stressed he will recover the best he can after being forced to start from the back of the grid at this weekend’s Italian Grand Prix. Hamilton will start at the back after taking on his fourth power unit of the season, one more than the FIA yearly allowance.

The engine suffered damage in a 45G impact with Fernando Alonso at the start of the Belgian Grand Prix. However, Mercedes are understood to be looking into ways they can reuse the engine at a later date this season.

Hamilton also confirmed the team were “still hopeful” they could re-use the power unit despite it being out of service for this weekend. Speaking at Thursday’s press conference, he said: “But yeah, I mean, my third engine that I had brand new in Spa is still being worked on, so I can’t use it right now, so I have to take a fourth.

“So that’s my doing. And we’re still hopeful we can use that later on. But yeah, so I’ve got to kind of recover the best I can from the back.” Hamilton’s former team-mate Valtteri Bottas will also receive a penalty after also taking on a new engine.

Red Bull are also said to be considering new parts for Sergio Perez after doing the same for Max Verstappen in Spa. Hamilton secured five podiums in consecutive races before the summer break but has struggled since.

He crashed out of the Belgian Grand Prix and dropped off the podium at the Dutch Grand Prix after a bad strategy call. Hamilton stayed out on old mediums as those around him stopped for spots during a late safety car.

It saw the seven-time champion drop from second to fourth within a couple of laps, sparking an angry outburst on team radio by the Briton.

But, Hamilton has admitted the Monza circuit was “great for overtaking” as he attempts to work his way through the field on Sunday. He explained: “It’s great for overtaking and the thrill of driving here, because you’re on low downforce and you’ve kind of floating on the surface of the tyres, is pretty epic.

“So I’m really grateful for the wins that I’ve had. I remember my first race here, in 2007 and the pass on Kimi, and, you know, it’s not an easy circuit, and it throws lots of spanners in the works.”
