Lewis Hamilton commits to Mercedes until 2025

Lewis Hamilton will surpass Tom Brady in the stakes to become the world’s highest-earning athlete of all-time after penning his lucrative new contract with Mercedes. The seven-time world champion finally committed his future to the Silver Arrows to put an end to months of speculation, including rumours of a move to Ferrari, and with his new deal rubber-stamped, Hamilton is set to surpass NFL icon Brady in the stakes to be crowned sport’s richest athlete.

The 38-year-old will be tied to the team until the end of the 2025 season after signing a contract worth £50.5m a year, putting him back on top as Formula 1’s highest-earning driver.

Hamilton had been overtaken when Max Verstappen agreed a long-term deal worth £40m a year, but the Dutchman’s money-spinning deal has been blown out of the water with Hamilton in his own league of earnings.

That figure only relates to his base salary with the team, and considering Hamilton has several endorsement deals that allow him to earn millions more on in revenue, it is no surprise that he is at the halfway point to join the billionaire’s club with Tiger Woods and Roger Federer.

According to data from Essentially Sports, Hamilton’s career earnings in F1 currently stand at £410.8million ($512.1m) after making his debut in 2007 with McLaren. With two more years in F1 allowing him to pocket £101m, he will jump to £511.8m and leapfrog Brady in the process.

The former American Football player, widely regarded as the most successful in NFL franchise history, retired in 2022 after dominating the sport for the majority of his 23 seasons. Brady shot to stardom with the New England Patriots before ending his two-decade long association with the team to sign with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.

Now 46, Brady is a part-owner of Birmingham City in the Championship, English football’s second tier, as he looks after his various business ventures in the United States.

During his glittering career which includes six Super Bowl rings, Brady earned a staggering £425m ($530m) as the league’s star quarterback. His deal with the Bucs saw him collect a huge £20m for his one-year deal plus a £16m signing bonus.

But now that he has stepped away from the game, Hamilton will take the crown as sport’s top earner with sponsors not included. However, that won’t stop Hamilton from viewing the American as a role model.

“I think I look at people like Tom Brady, who’s such an incredible athlete and has shown what can be done today,” Hamilton said. “He’s the real role model, in that respect, I think for all athletes to be able to look at.

“I’m really, really fortunate that I’ve been able to speak to him to understand, as well, what he’s done, what he does consistently to keep himself in shape, and he’s expressed it in the media anyway.”
