Mercedes lose long-term sponsor as Lewis Hamilton’s car to don new branding in 2022

Mercedes are set to have a new sponsor adorn their famous Formula 1 car in 2022 after one of their long-term deals ended. Japanese electronics and printer company, Epson, will not continue their sponsorship of the constructors’ giants in 2022.

The move means the partnership between the Silver Arrows and Epson has come to end after seven seasons together – report

It also means the Mercedes car to be piloted by British duo Lewis Hamilton and George Russell will have a new sponsor – and more could follow.

Bose, another long-term partner of the German team, are yet to be confirmed as a sponsor for the upcoming F1 season. 

The audio equipment company no longer appear on Mercedes’ list of partners on their website.

But it is understood that talks between Bose and Mercedes are ongoing.

While the loss of Epson is believed to be a blow for the Silver Arrows, the team are in a strong commercial position and are confident of replacing them with new and attractive sponsors. 

On the track, Mercedes are sweating over the future of seven-time world champion Hamilton. 

After his heartbreaking title loss to Max Verstappen in Abu Dhabi, the Brit has yet to break his silence on social media and it has led to rumours that he is weighing up retirement.

The Dutchman showed a mature side to his game, creating a deadly combination of poise and aggression to take control of the championship race early and finished with more pole positions, race wins and laps led than any other driver.

The 24-year-old will be one of the title front runners once again in 2022, particularly as Red Bull’s car will likely suit the aerodynamic-based regulation changes given their technical director, Adrian Newey, is a top-tier aerodynamicist. 

Verstappen and Hamilton, if he returns will have to be considered as one of the favourites to claim the 2022 Drivers’ Championship. 

While Red Bull and Mercedes are still the favourites to get out ahead of the new regulations, the imminent changes could shake up the grid order and allow a contender to emerge from the shadows. 

Originally intended for the 2021 season, the regulations were delayed a year due to Covid. 

These regulations are aimed at reducing ‘following car distance’ by removing ‘dirty air’ that leading cars leave in their wake, making overtaking moves more difficult due to the turbulent air flow. 

Cars will differ quite substantially from their predecessors despite power units essentially being unchanged, as sidepods, airboxes, brake ducts, underbodies and both front and rear wings are set to be redesigned. 

The addition of 18-inch wheels will also massively affect the cars, both visually and technically. 

It would be difficult to bet against Mercedes in 2022, given the Silver Arrows have won eight successive Constructors’ Championships and they are arguably the most innovative team on the grid.

F1 will return in 2022 for pre-season testing on February 23 before the opening Bahrain Grand Prix on March 20.
