Haas driver Mick Schumacher insists he does not get angry when making mistakes as they are a natural part of his development in Formula 1. Schumacher endured a difficult rookie campaign in the sport as his Haas car was supremely uncompetitive, leaving the German and teammate Nikita Mazepin consistently at the back of the grid.
The 22-year-old made a number of errors in his debut season, costing his team more money in crashes than any other driver did across 2021.
Haas team principal Guenther Steinerner was publicly critical of the driver as a result.
“Mick in the last five races had quite a few big ones,” Steiner said after the first half of the campaign.
“It’s a lot of money and for no good reason. They are getting a little bit too frequent and too heavy.”

Steiner’s frustration didn’t spread to Schumacher, though.
The German is confident in his abilities and does not see crashes as being particularly negative.
Schumacher believes he learns a lot from crashes and develops into a more mature – and better – driver after making them.
“I think that you can definitely get angry about it,” he said per Motorsport-Magazin.com.

“But I don’t dwell on it too long.
“I am not extremely annoyed about any mistake, because mistakes are there to be learned and everything is part of the development.”
His mistakes weren’t costly on the track – Haas failed to score a single point all season and were never in contention to do so – and Schumacher believes it was better to suffer such errors during his rookie year.
“It’s better that this happened to me now when we weren’t racing for points, than if next year things went the way we’d like and then, stupidly, it happened,” Schumacher added.
Schumacher assessed his debut season from a philosophical perspective, finding positives as he was consistently faster than teammate Mazepin over the season.
He also made it into Q2 in Turkey, which was a particular highlight of the German’s season.
Schumacher also feels that Haas managed to close the gap to the teams ahead of them without developing their car, instead switching focus to 2022.
F1 will return in 2022 for preseason testing on February 23 before the opening Bahrain Grand Prix on March 20.
