Springboks forced into isolation as De Jager tests positive for Covid

Springboks suspend training after Lood de Jager becomes third player to test positive for Covid-19 with the entire squad forced forced into isolation… as Lions Tour hangs in the balance

  • Lood de Jager has become the third Springboks player to test positive for Covid
  • The entire South Africa squad has been forced into isolation as a result
  • Vincent Koch and centre Sbu Nkosi also caught the virus last week
  • The positive result puts fresh doubts over the Lions tour this month

The Springboks suffered another Covid scare, putting fresh doubts over the Lions tour, with lock Lood de Jager testing positive for the virus.

The Sale Sharks second-row has also forced the entire South African group into isolation, as he was a close contact of many of the squad.

Jacques Nienaber’s side are preparing for their second Test against Georgia this Friday, having beaten Los Lelos 40-9 last Friday in the first game, but had to cancel training in light of this development.

De Jager is now the third Bok to test positive for Covid. Last week Saracens prop Vincent Koch and centre Sbu Nkosi caught the virus, with scrum-half Herchel Jantjies initially testing positive too before it emerged this was a false result.

The world champions will now undergo further PCR testing to make sure the virus has not spread throughout their squad.

This news is not remotely welcome during a tour that is hanging on a knife-edge, the dark cloud of Covid hanging over it.

There will be no room to rearrange games in case of a cancellation, so any significant outbreaks would decimate the entire venture.
