7 Man Utd players Ralf Rangnick could turn to as captain instead of Maguire

A new manager means a new era and a time to start afresh. Players before labouring in the shadows finally have a chance to reignite their career and get some minutes under their belt. Others seemingly destined for a move away now have another shot in forging their way to being a club legend.

Of course, this isn’t always the case. Some might be on a slight downward spiral and find themselves further afield when a new coach comes in and takes charge.

Harry Maguire earned his right as a Manchester United captain for some brilliant displays, in particular last season. However, this campaign his form has faded and with a Ralf Rangnick in charge, now might be a good time to have an overhaul on the captaincy front.

It’s a long shot, but we thought we would take a look at some of the options at the German’s disposal if Maguire was to be demoted as United’s man with the armband.

David De Gea

De Gea had to fight for his position with Dean Henderson over the summer and won. He’s made some brilliant saves and really upped his game this campaign.

He’s commanding, a long-serving member of the side, and one of United’s most talented squad members. Captain potential? Absolutely.

Cristiano Ronaldo

Who do you think would make a good choice as Man United captain? Let us know your thoughts in the comments section below.

Undoubtedly Ronaldo will be one of the most popular suggestions on this list. A natural leader, the former Real Madrid star can drag the club forward when the going gets tough (see Atalanta games), and of course, is already a superstar across the globe. Being one of the greatest players to ever grace the pitch helps massively too, of course.

The flipside of this is the discussion about his lack of pressing and whether he would suit a Rangnick-inspired system. But who’s to say United’s number seven doesn’t make a slight adaption to his game in the coming months?

Raphael Varane

The first thought that came to mind was whether the Frenchman can speak English, having spent time in France and a majority in Spain.

But Varane can speak English very well and would be an interesting case to make the captain. Another natural leader, the 28-year-old dominates the backline and posseses exquisite in his work-rate and determination. But having been at the club not even six months, this would be a very unlikely move.

Luke Shaw

Some may laugh but Shaw was considered one of the best left-backs in Europe last campaign. Stats back it up too.

He was phenomenal for United and even one of England’s standout performers in Euro 2020 (that sweet goal against Italy in the final being a particular highlight.) But with his injuries and inconsistency this season, it’s doubtful Shaw has the makings of a hardy captain just yet.

Bruno Fernandes

Fernandes’ goal against Arsenal on his 100th capped might be a signifier that his best days in a Red Devils shirt are back.

An orchestrator, the Portugal international can score and create in equal measure. Some might question his mentality at times, though – sometimes walking around the pitch with his head dropped when United are trailing. So the jury's out on this one.

Paul Pogba

Pogba’s supposed exit out of United has crept past the half-a-decade mark. A polarising figure, Pogba can deliver performances that make your hairs stand on end – see his quad of assists against Leeds on an opening day – or he struggles to get a foothold in the game, often giving away misplaced passes.

His World Cup-winning campaign saw his leadership qualities come out, so it is there. But whether he can do the same in a United top remains to be seen.

Scott McTominay

The Scot has been unfairly associated with the plight of United in recent years. But he is a player of great potential and quality. His performance against Villarreal in the Europa League final last campaign was nothing short of remarkable.

Maybe not one for now, but for the future. McTominay has the capabilities to be a true leader in the future – but it will take a great manager to help him fulfil that.
