Atletico Madrid dropped two more points at Almeria as Diego Simeone began his post-Joao Felix era with a chaotic draw. They took the lead but sat back to defend it and paid the price.
They were more positive in the second half but with Sergio Reguilon was sent off late on as the clock ticked any chance of a late winner disappeared.
On 18 minutes Atletico Madrid had the breakthrough. Geoffrey Kondogbia managed to get to a loose ball ahead of El Bilal Toure and play it to Antoine Greizmman. The Frenchman stepped over it knowing that Angel Correa was running in behind. He took one touch to get it out of his feet and then he sent it low under the dive of Fernando Martinez for his fourth goal of the season.
Angel Correa puts Atletico Madrid ahead but Diego Simeone’s men drop points at Almeria
Atletico’s travelling supporters sang Diego Simeone’s name. His decision to go with Correa had paid off and the visitors were in front. But Simeone then tinkered from the touchline trying to switch to a back five and it contributed to the visitors’ undoing.
First Jan Oblak presented Almeria with a chance by twice playing out poorly from the back. First his pass put Axel Witsel under pressure and then he cleared, under pressure, straight out for a corner.
Atletico were clearly now going to try to pick Almeria off on the break and from Marcos Llorente’s run and cross Thomas Lemar teed-up Correa who couldn’t finish. They had the ball in the net with their next attack but Kondogbia was offside when he swept in Correa’s shot from close range. The effort might have gone in anyway.
El Bilal Toure scores the equaliser for Almeira as they held Atletico Madrid to a draw on Sunday
They regretted it even more minutes later when Toure equalized. Lucas Robertone swung the cross in from deep and the Mali striker launched himself at it to power past Oblak.
Simeone had gone to three centre-backs but none of them got near the man attacking the ball. Oblak was torn between coming and staying on his line and did neither and it was 1-1.
Shortly afterwards Kondgobia had words with Simeone and his body language seemed to say: what do you want me to do? Confusion reigned and Koke was off at the break as Simeone threw on 19-year-old Pablo Barrios.
Atletico improved after the restart and Correa sent Griezmann through but he shot straight at Fernando. Almeria also threatened with Toure impressive. He was taken off on 66 minutes though with substitutes Largie Ramazani and Luis Suarez coming on. It was a relief for Atletico’s shaky defence to see the back of him.
Atletico’s Sergio Reguilon was shown two yellow cards in final five minutes and was sent off
He immediately sent one shot swerving wide. Alvaro Morata had come on for Atletico and he headed Griezmann’s cross a metre wide of the near post when there was space inside Fernandos’ far post.
He then missed another chance from Correa’s cross with Fernando saving. Llorente then put Griezmann in and when he squared for Correa the Argentine should have scored but hit the shot straight of the goalkeeper. Correa was taken straight off and Simeone put on centre-back Felipe. It was another slightly bemusing changing – going to back five while chasing the game.
The idea was that substitute Reguilon would have great freedom to get forward from left wing-back but on 90 minutes he was off. He had already been yellow-carded for dissent and when he lead with a fist in an aerial duel he was given the second caution.
