Andre Onana offered Man Utd escape route just months after £47million transfer

Andre Onana could be offered an escape route away from Old Trafford after a woeful start to his Manchester United career.

Onana joined United in the summer in a £47million move from Inter Milan, replacing David De Gea who left the club at the end of his contract following over a decade as United’s number one keeper. But Erik Ten Hag wanted more from the Spaniard in his possession and sweeping play, citing Onana, who he previously managed at Ajax as the ideal signing.

But the 27-year-old has endured a wretched start to life in Manchester after making costly errors in United’s two opening Champions League defeats against Bayern Munich and Galatasaray, as well as a high profile mistake against Brentford last time out.

And it seems as though the door has been left ajar for Onana to possibly make a remarkable return to Inter Milan after the club’s CEO Giuseppe Marotta didn’t rule out the Italian giants making a move to re-sign their former number one.

Speaking to Gazzetta dello Sport Festival, he said: "Anything can happen in football, even if those who do not always have positive results." Marotta added how big of a coup he was for Inter when he arrived as a free transfer from Ajax in 2022, selling him for £47m the following summer.

He continued: "It was an important experience for him and for us. It was also a very successful deal for us to get him for free [from Ajax] and sell him for all that money."

However, an exit from Old Trafford looks incredibly unlikely after Erik ten Hag was so intent on bringing his former Ajax stopper to United. Although ESPN reports that his place in the side is under threat with Ten Hag preparing to drop him should his poor form continue.

Alongside Onana, United also made the £4.3million signing of Turkey international and former Fenerbache number one Altay Bayindir in the summer, with the 25-year-old waiting in the wings to make his impact at the club should the opportunity arise.

It previously seemed as though Ten Hag was willing to give Onana every opportunity to succeed at United after he revealed he selected Onana for the EFL Cup win against Crystal Palace so he could continue to adapt to the standard of the English game. A game in which he kept just a third clean sheets in 11 matches so far.
