Aston Villa boss Dean Smith offers Jack Grealish injury update after Carabao Cup

Aston Villa may have lost to Manchester City at Wembley but there is good news surrounding the fitness of talisman Jack Grealish.

The 24-year-old was on the turf before full-time after being noticeably quiet during the closing stages, with fans worried about a possible injury.

Those fears have now been quashed by Dean Smith, who confirmed after the game that his captain was suffering from cramp according to Birmingham Live .

The former Brentford boss was also quick to tell the media of how proud he was on his players, with a crunch clash against Leicester next weekend.

He said: “It’s a mountain to climb when Man City go up but you have to be patient and disciplined.

“I told the lads I am proud of them. We went toe-to-toe.

“We asked questions today. We all know that was a goal-kick today but we had a corner to defend and we should have done it better.

Before adding: “We were playing against a top team and we had to defend well.

“There was never any sense of a backward step and this pleased me more than anything.

“The performance level is what it should be and we got a reaction from the players.

“The concentration goes to the Premier League and if we play like that we will get out of it.

“The players will take an awful lot of pride from that, no player wants to go out ever and play poorly.

“They did that last week and they got a reminder from me. I was pleased with that reaction.”

Sky Sports pundit Gary Neville agreed with Smith that his players should be proud of themselves, but admitted that they didn’t deserve to win.

He said:"City deserved it overall, they were the better team, we expected that.

"But Smith's men can be proud playing against one of the world's great sides and they will be disappointed tonight."
