Manchester United suffered a miserable day in the Premier League on Saturday as they went down to a home defeat against Aston Villa. The West Midlands side won the game in the 88th minute courtesy of a Kortney Hause header as they secured their first league victory over United since December 2009.

There was drama at the end of the encounter as Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s side had the opportunity to grab a point as they were awarded a penalty deep into stoppage time.

All eyes were on the penalty taker as fans held their breath to see whether Cristiano Ronaldo would step-up to take the kick or whether the responsibility would fall to regular taker Bruno Fernandes.

It was Fernandes who grabbed the ball as Ronaldo stepped aside for his compatriot – but there were devastating consequences.

Ronaldo was forced to look on in disbelief as Fernandes blasted his effort high over the crossbar as Villa went away with all three points.

And there was outrage in some quarters after the final whistle after it emerged that Villa midfielder Douglas Luiz was seen laughing at Fernandes after the Portugal international had fluffed his lines.

The Brazilian was clearly delighted that Fernandes had missed his chance to level the match and wasn’t ashamed to show his amusement.

Luiz was one of a number of players who chagrined United boss Solskjaer by surrounding Fernandes as he prepared to take the spot kick.

“I wasn’t going to mention it but it’s not right that they do that,” said the United boss after the match.

“I guess that should be a yellow card for someone but they have achieved what they wanted. Unfortunately we missed the chance to get a point.”

The defeat meant United dropped to fourth in the Premier League table as they were overtaken by fierce rivals Manchester City, who moved up to second following their 1-0 victory at Chelsea.

Solskjaer’s side are yet to face any of the top-flight big boys this season but had already dropped points against lowly Southampton before Saturday’s loss.

Pressure is now mounting on the Norwegian boss after his side lost their opening Champions League game against Young Boys earlier this month and were knocked out of the Carabao Cup by West Ham this week.

The Red Devils now host Villarreal in the Champions League on Wednesday night before a big Premier League clash with Everton next Saturday.

They will be looking to get back to winning ways against the Toffees ahead of a tough run of games which sees them then face Leicester City, Liverpool, Tottenham and Man City.

United will be sweating on the fitness of Luke Shaw and Harry Maguire for their upcoming clashes after both players were forced off during Saturday’s defeat.

Solskjaer later admitted they will both miss Wednesday’s European clash.
