Atletico Madrid boss Diego Simeone and club president Enrique Cerezo are apparently at loggerheads over a transfer proposition from Barcelona. The Spanish clubs are two of six who have opened their La Liga seasons with two wins and a draw.

Barcelona appeared to be edging towards the precipice earlier this summer when president Joan Laporta announced that his club was in £1.15billion of debt.

And the Catalan giants have been desperate to get some of their highest earners off their books ever since as they look to reduce their outgoings to come in line with La Liga spending limits.

Barca were forced to allow Lionel Messi to depart the club earlier this summer as they weren’t able to fit his prodigious salary into their budget.

And they have now apparently offered Antoine Griezmann to Atletico in exchange for Joao Felix.

According to Spanish publication Sport, Simeone is keen to bring the France striker back to the Wanda Metropolitano but Cerezo does not want to lose Felix.

Griezmann played for Atletico for five years after joining the club from Real Sociedad in 2014.

During his time in Madrid, the 30-year-old racked up an impressive 133 goals in 257 games and contributed 50 assists.

He has since starred for Barcelona after joining the Spanish giants for £107million in 2019.

Despite playing for two of the biggest clubs in Spain, Griezmann has remarkably never won a La Liga title and could be allowed to walk away from Barca before the transfer deadline.

Felix, meanwhile, signed for Atletico from Benfica just days before Griezmann was sold to Barca and cost the club a staggering £113m.

The striker became the second most expensive teenager in the game’s history after Paris Saint-Germain’s Kylian Mbappe.

He won the La Liga title last season but has only managed to score 13 goals in 58 league games for Atletico.

The Portugal international is 21-years-old and surely provides Atletico with a better long-term option than Griezmann, something Cerezo appears well aware of.

Felix, who has won 18 caps for Portugal, is yet to play for Atletico this season after undergoing ankle surgery earlier this summer.

The forward had been suffering with the problem during the second half of last season.

With time running out before the transfer window closes at 11pm, it remains to be seen whether Atletico and Barca can thrash out a late deal.

But Simeone will first need to persuade Cerezo that the player exchange is in the best interest of his club.
