Barcelona 'pin up story of Cristiano Ronaldo's Covid positive' on wall

Barcelona ‘pin up news story of Cristiano Ronaldo’s Covid positive on dressing room wall’ as warning to players to stay cautious and avoid risk of getting infected with virus

  • A story on Cristiano Ronaldo’s Covid case was spotted in Barca’s dressing room
  • The story is there to remind Barca players to reduce the risk of getting infected
  • Ronaldo missed a Champions League game with Barca due to the infection

The Barcelona dressing room seems like an unlikely place to find a mention of Cristiano Ronaldo given his history with arch rivals Real Madrid.

But the Portuguese’s name can be food on the wall of the dressing room at the club’s training ground as a warning to players to minimise the risk of catching coronavirus.

Ronaldo was one of the most high profile sports stars to get the virus after being infected while on international duty with Portugal last October.

A news story about Ronaldo’s positive Covid test serves as a warning to Barca’s players

He was forced to isolate and missed a long-awaited battle with Lionel Messi when Barca visited Juventus in last season’s Champions  League.

And Spanish newspaper AS has revealed that a cut-out news story of Ronaldo’s infection can still be found at Barca’s training ground for the Catalan side’s players to be reminded that footballers can easily catch the virus despite following strict protocols since it caused havoc in March 2020.

Below the news story is another warning to the players, reading ‘The competition is at stake’, making it clear that positive cases put their games at risk.

Barcelona certainly benefitted from Ronaldo missing their fixture with Juve in Turin as they earned a 2-0 win thanks to an Ousmane Dembele goal and a late Messi penalty.

But Ronaldo recovered in time for the return fixture at the Nou Camp and made his mark by scoring two penalties as Juve pulled off a surprise 3-0 win to take top spot in Group G which meant Barca finished second and were unseeded for the last-16.

But he recovered to face Barca at the Nou Camp and scored twice in a 3-0 win for Juventus

That led to Barca meeting Paris Saint-Germain in the next round and losing 5-2 on aggregate to exit the competition at the earliest stage since 2007.

Barca had relatively few Covid positives last season, with Sergi Roberto being the only squad regular to miss matches due to the virus.

The Catalans’ management of the virus did not help their bid for the Spanish title last season, though, as they finished third while Atletico Madrid, who suffered an outbreak at the start of 2021, won LaLiga for the first time in seven years.
