Bellingham’s SPOTY afterparty gesture sees him branded ‘a very classy young man’

Jude Bellingham has been branded a ‘very classy young man’ after the Borussia Dortmund star made a gesture at the after-party for the Sports Personality of the Year awards.

The 18-year-old had been nominated for the Young Sports Personality of the Year, though he was beaten to that by Olympic bronze medal-winning skateboarder Sky Brown.

He ended his first season at Dortmund by helping the Bundesliga club to win the DFB-Pokal in May, establishing himself as a key player in their midfield.

Bellingham also starred on the international stage, making three appearances from the bench at Euro 2020, with the first of those making him the youngest Englishman to play at a major tournament.

His performances and achievements earnt him the nomination for the award, with Bellingham travelling over from Dortmund to attend Sunday’s ceremony.

He would have been left disappointed after seeing Brown beat him following a remarkable Olympics for the 13-year-old.

But Bellingham did not let that disappointment show at the afterparty, instead showing his class with a heartwarming gesture.

BBC Sport worker Ron Chakraborty was in attendance at the ceremony and spotted Bellingham walking around the room to wish everyone he met well, whether they were staff or nominees.

And it was gesture that saw Chakraborty hail Bellingham as a “very classy young man”.

“A memory I will take from #SPOTY is Jude Bellingham going round the room of contenders, guests, staff and caterers to say thank you and wish them well before he left. A very classy young man,” he tweeted.

German football has now broken up for its winter break, with Dortmund back in action when they travel to Eintracht Frankfurt in the Bundesliga on 8 January.

Bellingham is set to be the subject of heavy transfer interest in the winter window, with several Premier League clubs understood to be tracking his progress at Signal Iduna Park.
