Berbatov horrified by Man Utd fan who missed 1999 winner by going toilet

Dimitar Berbatov has been left horrified by a Manchester United fan that missed their winning goal in the 1999 Champions League final because he was in the toilet.

The former United forward was appearing in the first edition of Betfair's new 'VAR-Batov' series that will see the Bulgarian judge football injustices submitted by supporters.

The first episode saw Berbatov speak with three supporters, including United fan Dan who missed Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's 93rd minute winner after rushing to the toilet.

The other fans to feature were an Arsenal supporter who overslept and missed his first Arsenal match and a disgruntled Tottenham Hotspur supporter.

Speaking after surprising the fans, Berbatov said: Most of the time football can be very cruel to players, teams and especially fans.

"You can have a great game and deserve to be winning but then in the 95th minute a decision could go against you and 'bam', you lose the match and are heartbroken. It used to take me a long time to get over these moments.

"I enjoyed speaking to the three fans and hearing their unfair moments. Their stories were said, unfortunate but also funny. I was listening to them and I couldn't believe that these things actually happened, they were so unlucky."

Berbatov retired from playing in 2018 and now works for Betfair as one of the British betting company's brand ambassadors.

During his playing career he spent four years at United after joining from Spurs in 2008 and scored 56 goals in 149 appearances for the club.

He also won eight trophies with the Red Devils, including two Premier League titles and a pair of League Cups.

Reflecting on speaking to Berbatov, United fan Dan, 35, from Stockport said: "When Berbatov came on I couldn't believe it, it was amazing to spend time with such a great United player and talk about football and things at the club.

"Ever since, I've been telling my mates how he's now a good friend and how we're on a first name basis. It was awesome telling them about it."

United famously won the Champions League in 1999 with two stoppage time goals to turn the match on its head against Bayern Munich at the Camp Nou.

Teddy Sheringham cancelled out Mario Basler's early opener in the 91st minute, before Solskjaer scored the winner two minutes later to deliver the club's second European title.

Dan missed Solskjaer's goal, though, as he explains: "60 minutes in I needed the toilet, I knew United would score because they always scored late.

"When Teddy Sheringham scored the equaliser I jumped up and went crazy, then I ran upstairs to the toilet, washed my hands and as I came out I heard screaming from the living room, I missed United's winning goal."

Dan has now gone someway to making up for missing that famous goal by speaking with United icon Berbatov and has seen plenty of United success in the 22 years since.
