Prime Minister Boris Johnson has confirmed that football stadiums will not need to have a capacity limit from July 19.

It will come into action three weeks before the Premier League kicks off on August 13 as promoted side Brentford host Arsenal.

While Championship clubs will be able to enjoy full crowds when they kick off a week earlier.

It will be the first time football stadiums enjoy a full capacity since the middle of March 2020, when Covid-19 put the country into lockdown.

This comes in the fourth step of the Government's roadmap returning to life before the disease struck.

Johnson said in his daily briefing: "As we come to the fourth step, we have to balance the risks.

"We must take a careful and balanced decision."

But he also warned that the pandemic if "far from over".

The Prime Minister added: "We'll move away from legal restrictions and allow people to make their own informed decisions about how to manage the virus.

"From step four we will remove all legal limits on the numbers meeting indoors and outdoors.

"We will allow all businesses to reopen, including nightclubs, we will lift the limit on named visitors to care homes and the numbers of people attending concerts, theatre, and sports events."

Crowd experiments took place earlier this year in the FA Cup and Carabao Cup final, with thousands watching those games at Wembley.

While attendances have been growing during Euro 2020, with 40,000 watching England beat Germany 2-0 in the round-of-16.

July 19 could also see social distancing and compulsory face-mask wearing get scrapped.

Johnson reportedly wants to scrap the legal requirement and possible fines of up to £6,400 to make mask wearing a choice.

But Chief Medical Officer Chris Whitty has said he wants to see rules on masks stay after July 19.
