Borussia Dortmund and Manchester United are reportedly set for talks today over a potential swap deal that could see the Red Devils outcast Jadon Sancho return to the German club.

Sancho has been frozen out at Old Trafford in recent months after a public fall-out with manager Erik ten Hag.

After being left out of the United squad to face Arsenal in early September, Sancho claimed he had been made a ‘scapegoat’ and he has not played for the club since. He could now be offered an escape route by his former club Dortmund.

According to BILD Sport journalist Christian Falk, a meeting is due to take place today to discuss a swap deal that could see Sancho go back to Dortmund, and Dutch forward Donyell Malen move to Old Trafford next month.

United have shown interest in Malen, but Dortmund will only allow him to leave in a swap with Sancho, or if the English giants pay €30m (£25.7m).

Malen joined Dortmund the same summer that Sancho moved to United for £73m. He has made 92 appearances for the team, scoring 24 goals.

A return to the Westfalenstadion could appeal to Sancho given how successful his first spell was at the club.

He first joined Dortmund from Manchester City in 2017 as a 17-year-old and went on to spend four seasons at the club.

During this period, he registered 50 goals and 64 assists in 137 matches, winning the German Cup and German Super Cup.

These numbers earned him a switch back to England, but his career at United has never taken off.

After a difficult first season under Ole Gunnar Solskjaer and then Ralf Rangnick, Sancho did not feature for three months last season after taking an extended break to focus on his mental health.

He was brought back into the fold during the latter stages of last term, but fell out with Ten Hag in the opening weeks of this season and has been training away from the first team after refusing to apologise to the Dutchman.

Recent reports claimed Sancho has been ‘training like a beast’ to keep himself in top shape ahead of a potential January move.

However, former team-mate Nemanja Matic named Sancho as someone that was always late to training in an interview earlier this week as he discussed the problems he encountered during his time at Old Trafford.
