Cesc Fabregas has praised Billy Gilmour following his impressive performance in Chelsea’s FA Cup victory over Liverpool on Tuesday evening.
Goals from Willian and Ross Barkley secured a 2-0 win for Frank Lampard’s side to book their place in the FA Cup quarter-finals.
Gilmour, meanwhile, was named man of the match following his brilliant display at the heart of Chelsea’s midfield.
The 18-year-old was making only his fifth senior appearance for Chelsea, but the young midfielder did not look out of his comfort zone against Fabinho and Adam Lallana.
When a Chelsea fan asked Fabregas to rate Gilmour’s performance against Liverpool, the Spaniard replied: ‘Fantastic.
‘Personality on the ball, intelligence in his decision making, always making angles to offer himself and has that bit of aggression in him which is very important specially in the Premier League.
‘When you have the quality but also the desire, the work ethic and the intelligence, then is when you can see real potential in a young player. He has all of that.’
Meanwhile, Lampard also praised Gilmour’s display after Chelsea’s victory.
‘Billy showed today that he’s absolutely comfortable at this level,’ said Lampard.
‘If he can play like he played tonight then he’s comfortable at this level, so he can get himself in and around the team now.
‘The reason he moved from the academy to the first team building recently, to train with us all the time, is because of the quality of player he is.
‘He’s done himself no harm tonight with an immaculate performance, a brilliant performance.’
