Chelsea are the latest side to express an interest in signing AC Milan midfielder Franck Kessie on a free transfer. The Ivorian midfielder barged himself onto centre stage with a stunning campaign last season, as Stefano Pioli’s side finished second in Serie A last season.
He contributed thirteen goals and six assists in 37 appearances for the Rossoneri who qualified for the Champions League for the first time since 2014.
However, the playmaker’s contract expires next season and with the 24-year-old rejecting a new deal recently, Europe’s elite are queuing up for his signature.
According to Italian outlet Calciomercato, the Blues could be set to offer the former Atalanta midfielder up to £6.8millin per year to persuade him to come to Stamford Bridge.

While there is little doubt his arrival would surely bolster the Blues’ options, the depth of quality in Chelsea’s midfield would mean someone huge would have to miss out.
And one of those players who could well be Chelsea’s prized youngster Mason Mount.
The Blues midfielder has been one of The Blues’ most important players since making his League debut against Manchester United in 2019.
Since then, he has made 76 Premier League appearances for the West Londoners, scoring 13 goals, and contributing 13 assists.
Unfortunately for the 22-year-old, players of Kessie’s quality are not available very often, let alone for a free transfer.
While Kessie has been deployed as a defensive midfielder for Milan before, it’s unlikely he would break up the successful partnership of N’Golo Kante and Jorginho, who have both recently finished first and second in the men’s UEFA Player of the Year award.
This would mean he would likely be deployed him be deployed into the front three, where he would slot in just behind Romelu Lukaku.
Which could be bad news for Mount, as he would then be competing with Kai Havertz for the other position.
Not that Mount would be deterred and angry about his arrival.
Questions were being asked of Mount’s future last season when Kai Havertz, Hakim Ziyech, and Timo Werner arrived during Chelsea’s £220m summer spend last season, but Mount still managed to secure his place.
However, if Mount is to be frustrated by anything, it would perhaps be the money Kessie would be earning if he was to join the club.
If the Italian outlet is true, and Kessie would be earning £6.8m per year, then he would become Chelsea’s 10th highest earner at the club.
Mount is currently on £4.6m per year, equivalent to around £90,000 per week.
He still has three years left on the long-term contract he signed in the summer of 2019, before he had entrenched himself as a first team regular with the team.
However, if Kessie was to arrive into the club with more wages, and potentially more playing time than Mount, then it would surely upset the England star who has performed remarkably since becoming a regular.
