Cristiano Ronaldo snaps at Saudi fans as Lionel Messi chant triggers star

Cristiano Ronaldo snapped at Saudi Arabian fans who taunted the Portuguese icon with chants about his rival Lionel Messi. Al-Ettifaq supporters reminded Ronaldo about Messi’s eighth Ballon d’Or in a new low for the striker in his battle with the Argentina ace.

During a week in which Messi’s Ballon d’Or lead over Ronaldo extended to three, the Al-Nassr star continues to be rumbled by his competitor’s achievements. Ronaldo responded to news of Messi’s eighth Ballon d’Or gong by posting several laughing emojis in reply to a post on Instagram.

And he has now reacted to Saudi fans chanting the name of his biggest rival during a Pro League clash against the likes of Steven Gerrard and Jordan Henderson. Clips posted to social media show the 38-year-old being mocked over Messi’s latest triumph.

In the video, fans can be heard chanting “Messi, Messi, Messi” in the direction of Ronaldo. The striker initially refuses to respond but his frustration then boils over, placing his finger to his lips before angrily throwing his arm into the air.

It comes after Ronaldo posted four crying-laughing emojis in response to an Instagram post claiming that Messi was set to be crowned the Ballon d’Or winner. However, he had the last laugh over Al-Ettifaq as he helped Al-Nassr to a 1-0 victory over Gerrard, Henderson and co. Sadio Mane scored the only goal of the game.

Messi was awarded the Ballon d’Or after guiding Argentina to a remarkable World Cup triumph in December.

Controversially, he beat Manchester City forward Erling Haaland to the prize. Haaland bagged 52 goals last season and has started this campaign with 13 strikes in as many Premier League and Champions League appearances.

Messi gave an honorary mention to Haaland and Paris Saint-Germain striker Kylian Mbappe in his acceptance speech. But there was no mention of Ronaldo, who seems set to finish his career with five Ballon d’Ors.

“First of all, I want to thank the people who voted, who selected me as the winner of this award. I obviously share this with my teammates from the Argentina national team,” Messi said. “We are here representing everything that’s been achieved thanks to them. I believe that this is a gift for the entire group, the entire coaching staff, and for all the people of Argentina.

“I don’t want to forget to mention Erling and Kylian, they had a great year, an incredible year, both individually and collectively. It was spectacular to watch them achieve everything they did, and I have no doubt that in the coming years they are going to win this prize.

“I see a lot of young people here. I have no doubt that I am going to enjoy good football for a long time because of these types of players. I am lucky to have been at this ceremony for many years, and as the players keep changing and evolving, the level never drops, so we are going to continue enjoying it for many years.”
