Danny Murphy believes Newcastle are in a ‘precarious’ situation after their Saudi takeover and has warned that the game’s elite managers would struggle to do a better job than Steve Bruce. The Saudi Arabia backed Public Investment Fund (PIF) completed the £305m takeover on Tyneside last week and the managerial position looks set to be addressed immediately.

The Mirror reports Bruce is set to be relieved of his duties as Magpies boss before the first game of the new St James’ Park era against Tottenham on Sunday.

Newcastle’s new owners are looking for a new direction as they plan an overhaul in the North East and a host of top coaches have already been linked with the soon-to-be vacant post.

Antonio Conte has been unemployed since leaving Inter Milan after leading the Italian giants to their first Serie A title in 11 years.

Some have tipped Conte to begin the revolution under new ownership at Newcastle, and believe the 52-year-old can be trusted to use what will no doubt be a mammoth budget wisely.

Eddie Howe, Brendan Rodgers and much-loved former boss Rafa Benitez have also been mentioned as potential candidates for the role should Bruce be sacked.

But former Liverpool midfielder Murphy insists Newcastle must be wary of their current predicament as relegation battlers and not overlook the job Bruce can still do.

“You’ve got to be careful not to try and run before you can walk,” Murphy told TalkSport.

“The situation Newcastle are in now is precarious.

“They’ve got a manager in charge at the moment who has been there and done it in the lower echelons of the Premier League and dealt with that scenario before – even at Newcastle.

“Is there somebody out there who they can bring in who is going to be more equipped than Steve Bruce? That is ultimately the question.”

Newcastle sit 19th in the table and are winless under Bruce after seven Premier League games.

Plenty of supporters had already called for Bruce to be sacked long before the new regime and his days appear numbered on Tyneside.

But Murphy is unconvinced that Newcastle are in the position to appoint a top level manager like Conte and does not see an obvious candidate for a relegation battle.

“Who do they get in? There is no obvious candidate to come in for a relegation battle,” he added.

There is a different conversation if you are asking me are there managers out there who are capable of working with new players, spending money and competing.

“Of course there are, there are lots of good managers out there.

“Coming into the Premier League, if you haven’t been in it before coming into a relegation battle and understanding how to win games that aren’t always going to be free flowing or easy on the eye – who’s out there more equipped than Steve Bruce at the moment?

“Nobody jumps out at me.”
