Wayne Rooney was booed off after his DC United side were comfortably beaten against Philadelphia Union on Saturday night. Rooney’s DC United have now dropped to 10th in the Eastern Conference and out of the playoff spots – despite a strong start to the year and having an impressive roster.
Playing at home against second-placed Philadelphia Union, United were played off the park, with Mikael Uhre scoring early to give them the lead.
They doubled that just eight minuted later when Jack McGlynn scored, before a penalty just seven minutes prior to half-time had the boo birds out for Rooney and his team as they walked down the tunnel.
DC United did grab a consolation goal late on, but fell to a 3-1 defeat with them now falling outside of the playoff spots for the first time since the beginning of the year. As well as fans inside the stadium booing Rooney, many took to social media and stated their belief that Rooney should leave the club.
One fan said: “I have seen enough, Rooney is inexperienced and needs to go.” Another wrote: “Clean house now. Owners need to sell, Rooney needs to be fired, half the squad needs to be let go.”
After a year in charge in Washington DC, Rooney has a mixed record with a win percentage of 28.
However, it is not unfair to say that he inherited the worst team in the Eastern Conference when he arrived in July last year, with the five-time Premier League winner overseeing significant improvements over the past 12 months.
But despite that DC United have struggled over the last few months, consistently losing in all facets of the game, which showed in their defeat to Philadelphia.

With the likes of Christian Benteke, Mateusz Klich and Taziarchis Fountas on the roster, the team were seen as legitimate contenders heading into the season.
Rooney will need to stop the halt in the upcoming games of the MLS in-season break, with a playoff berth likely needed to quiet any talk of him being fired.
