Some of the biggest names in football could end up at Newcastle with the likes of Kylian Mbappe, Paul Pogba and Antonio Rudiger all seeing their contracts expire. The takeover of Saudi Arabia’s Public Investment Fund might tempt some players due to their mammoth wealth.
Newcastle have become the richest club in the world in the space of a few hours after Mike Ashley sold up for £300million.
The new owners are Saudi Arabia’s Public Investment Fund, chaired by the gulf state’s crown prince Mohammed bin Salman.
His total worth is around £320bn, dwarfing the likes of Manchester City, Paris Saint-Germain and Chelsea combined.
It means there could be some very exciting names entering St James Park in the coming years but all eyes will be on the club this summer in the transfer window.
There are rumours that a director of football could be brought in to help take the Magpies to the next level in the market.
And the first port of call will be to look at what free agents are available – and there are some big names on the horizon.
So, who could Newcastle sign on a free transfer next year?
Perhaps the biggest name of them all is Mbappe, who still retains a massive value of £145m despite entering the final year of his contract.
His situation remains complicated due to PSG’s insistence that he will pen a new deal while Real Madrid are the favourites for his signature.
Nobody quite knows what Pogba has lined up ahead of the summer and there is every chance he could sign a new deal with Manchester United or leave for nothing.
But Newcastle could throw a spanner in the works by offering the Frenchman wages that cannot be contended with.
Chelsea could be resigned to losing one of their best defenders next summer for nothing with the German so far unconvinced by their latest offers.
And that could allow Newcastle to steal in for the Germany international, who could build around the centre-back at the back.
Partnering Rudiger at the back could be his compatriot Sule, who will see his Bayern Munich contract expire at the end of the season.
The two are dominant defenders with serious pace and landing both on free transfers would be a massive boost for the Toon.
One of the best midfielders in Serie A is going for nothing next year and a move to the Premier League would entice the Ivorian.
And the 24-year-old might find that the best home for him could be in the north-east.
Often linked with Liverpool as a Georginio Wijnaldum replacement, it could be argued that Newcastle are yet to find their own player to fill the Dutchman’s boots.
Zakaria would provide that much-needed stability in midfield, as well as energy, and could be leaving Borussia Monchengladbach for nothing at the end of the season.
One of the most underrated defenders in the Premier League and had been priced by Burnley at over £30m – yet they could see him leave for free this summer.
At 28, the England international is entering the peak years of his career and could be the perfect signing for Newcastle in the early stages of their long-term project.
The United star looks destined to leave at the end of the season after proving that he can be the main man during his loan to West Ham.
A return to the Hammers had been mooted but Newcastle, who were interested before, with their new—found wealth could now be the favourites for his signature.
