Manchester United have received a much needed double injury boost ahead of an acid test of their Champions League credentials against Bayern Munich.
Manchester United news, exclusives and analysis
The Reds could be forgiven for heading to Germany in less than optimistic mood following a chastening start to the new season that reached its nadir following a 3-1 defeat at home to Brighton last weekend.
An already threadbare squad suffered a further blow on Monday when it was confirmed that Aaron Wan-Bissaka was set to miss the next two months having suffered a setback during the closing stages against the Seagulls.
United may, however, be in a position to recall Raphael Varane to the starting line-up after he featured in an opening training session on Tuesday morning.
The experienced France international has missed the last two games and his return would represent a welcome boost to Erik ten Hag whose defence was all at sea against Brighton.
Summer signing Mason Mount, meanwhile, appears to be well on the road to recovery too, after he also took part in first team training having been restricted to just two appearances for his new club since his summer move from Chelsea.
There was further good news, meanwhile, regarding Sofyan Amrabat who is yet to make his debut following his deadline day transfer and youngster Kobbie Mainoo who were both able to train away from the first team squad.
Ten Hag had been the driving force behind a move for the Morocco World Cup star who joined the Red Devils, initially on loan, hoping to add steel and energy to a midfield which has been short of a combative presence this term.
Mainoo impressed during pre-season and looked set for regular first team football before he suffered a freak injury against Real Madrid following a collision with Rodrygo.
The 18-year-old was able to take part in a light running exercise and United’s medical team will follow his progress carefully in the coming weeks ahead of his first team return.
