A member of the Arsenal 'Invincibles' team once had an awkward confrontation with a naked Arsene Wenger in a sauna, he has revealed.
David Bentley came through the ranks at Arsenal as a youth team player.
Despite his limited game-time, the winger was a member of the ‘Invincibles’ squad as a youngster having played his sole game on the last day of the iconic unbeaten season.
Now, speaking to popular Soccer AM producer Tubes on his 'Golf Life' series, Bentley looked back on his often tricky time blending into the star-filled line-up.
And, the ex-England international revealed that he once had an awkward encounter with legendary manager Wenger in a hotel sauna.
David explained how the Arsenal team had gone on a tour to Austria, when he decided to relax in the hotel sauna, noting: “I’d never seen a sauna, didn’t know what a sauna was, because I didn’t have that sort of money.
“So I’ve walked in with my shorts on, 16, 17 years old, [and I see] Wenger, Pat Rice and the other coach, all naked.
“But it’s so awkward because when you’re that young, you want to keep quiet.
“I’ve just sat down, and I just wanted a hole to open up.”
Towards the end of his time at Arsenal, Bentley embarked on loan spells with Norwich City and Blackburn Rovers, before spending five years at local rivals Tottenham Hotspur.
While at Spurs, he developed a reputation for practical jokes, famously soaking manager Harry Redknapp with a bucket of ice water while in his underwear after they had qualified for the Champions League for the first time.
The winger eventually retired at the relatively early age of 29, and has since reportedly gone on to run a group of bars in Spain.
