Alejandro Garnacho scored one of the Premier League’s all-time-great goals to put Manchester United ahead against Everton on Sunday afternoon. The acrobatic effort, which found the net inside three minutes, silenced a raucous Goodison Park crowd, whose protests against the Premier League had whipped up a crackling atmosphere.
The Toffees were on a mission to voice their anger upon returning to domestic action for the first time since being slapped with a 10-point deduction for breaching the Premier League’s profit and sustainability rules.
United and Everton players kicked off to a deafening soundtrack, but it did not take long for the home support to be stunned into silence. Teenager Garnacho was the player responsible, and his wondrous strike will take some beating in 2023/24.
While moving away from goal to meet Diogo Dalot’s deep cross, Garnacho executed a textbook, breathtaking bicycle kick which looped over Jordan Pickford to give United a 1-0 lead.

And the look on the 19-year-old’s face said it all. After copying Cristiano Ronaldo’s trademark celebration, he awaited the embrace of his team-mates almost in disbelief at scoring undoubtedly the goal of his career thus far.
Garnacho only became a senior starter last season, and he is now a fully-fledged member of Erik ten Hag’s first team. The winger, who was born in Spain but represents Argentina at international level, joined United from the Atletico Madrid academy in 2020.

His wondergoal certainly isn’t how Everton boss Sean Dyche will have wanted to begin his side’s attempt to fight their way clear of the drop zone. Despite making a solid start to the campaign, the Toffees went into the weekend level on points with bottom side Burnley.
“Disproportionate is a word that has been used by the club,” said Dyche on the punishment handed out. “Obviously we are going to feel aggrieved by that. On the other hand it doesn’t change the focus.
“Getting the team to win, getting the team to feel different, performances to be different. We were on the right lines for that and delivering strong performances. This has given us a push backwards to come forwards again.
“I spoke to the group and said the league table is one thing – the final league table is the truth. [The deduction] enhances what we are doing [because it means] we have to go harder for longer.”
