Hertha Berlin rocked by second player’s cancer diagnosis in a matter of months

Hertha Berlin star Jean-Paul Boetius has been diagnosed with a testicular tumour.

The midfielder is the second player from the Bundesliga club to be diagnosed with cancer after team-mate Marco Richter was given the dreaded news in July. It is a devastating blow for the Dutchman, who only moved to Hertha from Mainz in the summer.

He has so far appeared in every Bundesliga match for Sandro Schwarz’s side this season. However, the heartbreaking diagnosis means he is set to miss the majority of the campaign.

"Jean-Paul Boetius has been diagnosed with a testicular tumour following the results of a urological test,” a statement released by Hertha said. "He will be out for the foreseeable future.

"The club will provide further information on Boetius' recovery in due course. Until then we ask that everyone respects Jean-Paul's privacy during his recovery."

Hertha sporting director Fredi Bobic also echoed his club’s sentiments, highlighting their full support for the 28-year-old. "As tough as it is to hear at first, we are full of hope that Jean-Paul will be able to recover and return to us as soon as possible.

"He will receive our full support until he returns. The Hertha family are by his side, and wish him all the best."

Boetius’ team-mate Richter survived a cancer scare in the summer. However, the early prognosis on Richter’s tumour meant he was able to have it removed without needing any chemotherapy.

Richter has even made a prompt return to domestic football, contributing two goals in four league appearances this season. The footballing world will be hoping Boetius can make an equally timely comeback to the beautiful game.

Borussia Dortmund striker Sebastian Haller also had a malignant tumour discovered after he complained of feeling unwell in July. The 28-year-old has since undergone chemotherapy following the removal of the tumour. He is currently working on an individually tailored fitness regime at home.
