James Maddison has withdrawn from the England squad for their Euro 2024 qualifiers against Malta and North Macedonia with an ankle injury.
The news was confirmed by Tottenham Hotspur, who said that the star would remain with the club to rehabilitate from the knock picked up during their 4-1 defeat to Chelsea on Monday night.
Spurs posted on X (formerly Twitter): ‘We can confirm that James Maddison has been withdrawn from the England squad due to an ankle injury.
‘The midfielder will not feature in the Three Lions’ UEFA EURO 2024 qualifiers against Malta and North Macedonia, and will remain at Hotspur Way for rehabilitation with the Club’s medical staff.’
It means the playmaker is set to miss Spurs’ lunchtime trip to Wolves on Saturday.
James Maddison has withdrawn from the England squad for next week with an ankle injury
The Spurs playmaker was announced in Gareth Southgate’s England squad on Thursday
Maddison went to ground untouched in the penalty box during the first half against the Blues, and limped off before half time – as did Micky van de Ven, who was forced off with a hamstring problem.
The Spurs camp has been rocked by several setbacks, with van de Ven set for an extended spell on the sidelines as a result of his injury, and Richarlison undergoing groin surgery to try and correct a recurring issue.
It leaves Tottenham boss Ange Postecoglou dealing with a makeshift side for the Wolves game.
Sergio Romero and Destiny Udogie are suspended for the Premier League clash after their red cards on Monday, while Manor Solomon, Ivan Perisic and Ryan Sessegnon are also long-term absentees for Spurs.
England manager Gareth Southgate confirmed his squad for next week’s matches on Thursday, with qualification for next year’s European Championships already confirmed.
However, further changes may be coming for the England team, with Lewis Dunk picking up a groin problem during Brighton’s win over Ajax on Thursday.
The Three Lions host Malta at Wembley on Friday November 17, before travelling to North Macedonia for the final group game three days later.
England will be among the top seeds in the draw for EURO 2024 if they can top their group, and start the international break in a promising position, three points clear of second-placed Ukraine with a game in hand.
