Jeff Stelling’s son, Robbie, has paid an emotional tribute to his dad ahead of his farewell appearance on Sky Sports – but couldn't resist adding a crude joke.

The legendary broadcaster announced that he would be leaving back in October of 2021 before staying on for another season. This time though he insists he is standing down for good.

He announced last month: “It is groundhog day, it is that time of the year, every year, where I announce I am leaving Sky Sports and Gillette Soccer Saturday. But this time it is true.”

Fittingly, there will be plenty riding on his final show, with the Premier League relegation battle still to be decided with two of Everton, Leicester and Leeds fighting to avoid joining Southampton in the Championship.

And ahead of the show, Robbie Stelling took to Twitter to hail his dad’s influence on both himself and the iconic show – while also mocking one of Stelling's previous Christmas tweets.

He tweeted: “Well done Dad, so proud of you. You've put your heart and soul into the show and have no doubt left a mark on more than just the world of football. As a father and broadcaster, you have taught me so much about football and life. You are the best there has ever been x.”

Robbie then jokingly added: “I know you're going to have some more time on your hands, but please let Mum make the pigs in blankets this Xmas!”

Fans loved the tribute, with one replying: “That’s a lovely tribute Robbie. Your Dad will be sorely missed.”

Another said: “Hungerford fan here Robbie. Your dad is awesome. Transformed Saturday afternoons for me, in the days before I discovered non league. Legend is a term used too often, but he is one.”

A third concurred: “@JeffStelling has done so much for making football the loved sport that it is. It all comes from the heart, and that’s why what he says matters. No ego, just honesty and fun.”
