Juventus rounded off a disappointing evening on Saturday, with Federico Gatti scoring a bizarre own goal in the dying embers of the match to give Sassuolo a 4-2 win.

The loss means Juventus will drop from second to fourth in the Serie A standings, with Lecce and AC Milan both climbing above Massimiliano Allegri’s side after both secured 1-0 victories against Genoa and Verona, respectively.

The home side would take their lead into injury time and continued to press on Juve, pinning them back to their own byline. Juve won a free-kick in an odd position near the corner flag with Szczesny stepping out of his box to take the kick.

He fired the ball out to Gatti, who came under pressure from the Sassuolo attackers, and forgetting the goalkeeper was not in his net, the Italian, fired a pass-back into the back of his own net.

It was a bizarre moment in the match, with the Sassuolo players wheeeling away in ecstacy, while Szczesny stood on the edge of the penalty area in disbelief.

Fans took to social media to question what the 25-year-old, who joined Juve from Frosinone in 2022 was doing.

One wrote: ‘What in the World was Federico Gatti thinking here?…’

Another added: ‘This just happened. What an outrageous own goal by Juventus’s Federico Gatti’ while another said, ‘Federico Gatti frontrunner for funniest own goal of the season.’

Another said: ‘Federico Gatti with maybe the most comical own goal I’ve seen in my life. Unbelievable.’

Sassuolo, meanwhile, were sensational tonight, picking up their second win of the new league season, having lost their other three outings, with Armand Lauriente putting them a goal up after just 21 minutes.

The French midfielder struck a powerful shot at former Arsenal goalkeeper Wojciech Szczesny, who parried the initial strike, but the ball bounced downwards and passed between his legs.

Juventus were put back on level terms soon after with Sassuolo defender Matias Vina tapping in an own goal from a Juve cross. But the home side would restore the lead before half-time through Domenico Berardi powered a shot from the edge of the box into the bottom left corner.

Federico Cheisa, would snap one back for Juve to bring the scores level at 2-2, before Andrea Pinamonti put Sassuolo 3-2 up heading in a rebound before Gatti would produce the own goal to make it 4-2.

Juventus will be hoping to turn things around next week, but they’ll face a tough challenge in Lecce who are unbeaten so far this season.
