Manchester City have been rocked by the news that Ferran Torres is set for a spell on the sidelines after injuring himself while in international action for Spain. The 21-year-old has scored two goals in four Premier League appearances this season.

Torres got himself on the scoresheet for his country last week as he notched a brace in their 2-1 UEFA Nations League semi-final victory over Italy.

The striker, who had been chosen as Spain’s lone frontman for the clash, turned in Mikel Oyarzabal’s whipped cross after 17 minutes, before heading home from close range in first-half stoppage time.

However, he was forced off minutes into the second period after feeling the affects of a tackle from Chelsea midfielder Jorginho.

“I’m not sure how Ferran will be,” admitted Spain boss Luis Enrique after the semi-final.

“He had a knock in the first half and another in the second half so we decided to take no risks.”

Despite being taken off, Torres was remarkably deemed fit enough to start his country’s Nations League final against France four days later.

The youngster played 84 minutes but couldn’t prevent Spain losing 2-1 as Les Bleus lifted the trophy.

And following his withdrawal just before the end of that match, it has now been revealed by Spanish publication Marca that Torres will be out of action for just over a month with a foot fracture.

The manner of Torres’ injury will likely irritate City boss Pep Guardiola, who has been short of frontmen since Sergio Aguero departed in the summer.

Guardiola will be well within his rights to ask Enrique why Torres was deemed fit enough to start the final when he had been forced off with an injury just days before.

Torres had been in fine form for the Citizens before leaving for international duty, although he hadn’t made it off the bench in his side’s previous three Premier League games.

The forward struck a brace in City’s 5-0 win over Arsenal in August and appeared to be growing into his role of leading City’s frontline.

“I thought he has been outstanding in the past few months,” remarked former Manchester United defender Gary Neville in August.

“He’s a different player, obviously through the Euros, he’s someone that I think will be made into the centre-forward for City, he is already – but I think he can do really well.

“He’s a completely different physical specimen to what he was last season – he looked like he couldn’t run at full power or at full speed.

“It takes a bit of time sometimes to pick up Pep Guardiola’s system and way of players.

“Ferran Torres looks like a real player.”
