Football Digest: Analysing Man Utd's failed recruitment
The Glazer family are set to hand Erik ten Hag a bumper new deal at Manchester United along with a massive payrise, according to reports. The Dutchman has enjoyed a relatively successful spell in charge of the Red Devils, winning the Carabao Cup and achieving a top-four finish in the Premier League last season.
It seems as though the Glazers have been left impressed by Ten Hag, who is set to be rewarded with a new and improved contract before the end of this year. He will be offered a lucrative two-year extension, according to the Daily Star, with a deal expected to be wrapped up before the end of December.
The Glazers are said to be willing to prioritise Ten Hag’s long-term future in spite of the ongoing takeover process at Old Trafford. Contract talks were initially put on hold as a result of the situation but it now seems likely that negotiations will be concluded in the next few months.
Ten Hag currently earns around £9million per year at United but will reportedly get a significant payrise as a reward for the progress made under his guidance. His salary is set to increase by over 50 per cent to around £14m, which will put him among the club’s highest earners.

United’s show of faith will represent a timely boost for the 53-year-old, who has endured a rocky start to his second season in charge. His side edged past Wolves to claim a fortunate victory on the Premier League’s opening weekend before falling to defeat at Tottenham in their second outing.
Ten Hag will be aware that United are nowhere near the finished product as he looks to bring them back to the levels they showed under Sir Alex Ferguson a decade ago. He recently explained that he is using Manchester City as a benchmark for his players, who have shown they can beat top sides but are yet to keep up with them over the course of an entire season.

“I think the improvements last year and the results were quite obvious, but also in the performances it was quite obvious that we could beat the big opponents, including City,” the United boss told ESPN earlier this summer.
“In the three games [against them], you saw absolutely that we increased the levels against them. We have a competition with seven or eight clubs in the Premier League, across Europe [it’s] even more teams, so we have to work on our way of play and improve our performance. It has to be optimum.”
