Man Utd boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer said four interesting things before Brighton clash

Manchester United boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer will be determined to beat Brighton when the two teams lock horns in their Premier League showdown on Tuesday night. The Red Devils are unbeaten in their last 14 matches – their personal best under the Norwegian. Express Sport will now look at the best things Solskjaer said ahead of that showdown.

Angel Gomes heading to exit

Speaking on Monday, Solskjaer admitted that Manchester United were poised to lose Angel Gomes on a free transfer.

The playmaker’s current deal expires on Wednesday and no renewal has been signed.

And Solskjaer said: “To be honest, I have not heard from them last night or this morning.

“So it seems like they’ve not managed to agree, so the answer is probably short and ‘yes’ at the moment.

“I’ve got no news, so it doesn’t look like it [that he will sign a new deal].”

Solskjaer puts faith in Rashford

Marcus Rashford is yet to score for Manchester United since the season resumed, drawing blanks against Tottenham. Sheffield United and Norwich City so far.

And Solskjaer has defended the England international, saying: “Of course Marcus has been out for a while but I think he’s looked sharp, he came on and looked sharp against Norwich.

“Against Sheffield United he missed one or two chances but the goals he created is what we’re focusing on and he’s on his way to his best season ever.

“I’m looking forward to him getting more minutes and he’ll definitely score a goal soon.”

Rashford has 19 goals for United this season – the same amount as Anthony Martial.

Solskjaer on Chelsea

Solskjaer also opened up on United’s FA Cup draw with Chelsea. The duo will lock horns for a place in the final at Wembley in July.

“We’ve had lots of games at Wembley against them and, of course, we’ve had quite a few cup games against them in the last couple of seasons as well,” he said.

“They’re a team that will know a lot about us and they’re a team we know a lot about too. We’re looking forward to being at Wembley, any team who you draw there would be a top team anyway.

“I can’t wait, it’s been a while.”

United have won their last four meetings against Chelsea across all competitions.

Solskjaer on top four and Champions League importance

Solskjaer admitted that he was hoping to guide United into next season’s Champions League – but insisted he didn’t want to be distracted.

“I think every year you’re in the Champions League is a great experience, for the players it’s a step forward, for us it’s what we’re striving to do winning trophies and we need to focus on one game at a time,” he said.

“And there are so many teams that want that place, can’t get distracted about looking too far ahead and onto the next one.”

On the top four, he added: “I think there are many teams for that battle for third and fourth, Leicester, Chelsea, us, Wolves doing really well, Tottenham, Arsenal and Sheffield United want to put a run together and put a challenge in there.

“It’s exciting for fans, we’ve been waiting for football that matters, we want fans in the stadiums but at least now we can sit back and watch some exciting games.”
