It wasn’t pretty, but Manchester United got the job done. The Red Devils weren’t at their best throughout the showdown in Cyrpus, but a brace from Marcus Rashford and a further effort from Anthony Martial gave the visitors all three points. Now, it could be time for Erik ten Hag to trial a new attack…

Manchester United fell behind against Omonia in the first half, with Karim Ansarifard capitalising on a mistake from Tyrell Malacia to put the hosts ahead.

But, after Rashford came on at half-time, the contest completely changed.

The United star converted after a fine pass from Bruno Fernandes to boost the Red Devils, with Martial then netting following his own introduction.

Rashford then struck again in the closing stages and, while Nikolas Panayiotou forced a frantic finale, it was enough to give the visitors all three points.

It wasn’t the best of evenings for United.

But Rashford and Martial were both impressive, with the pair shining despite Jadon Sancho and Antony being picked to start the showdown.

Now, it could be time for Ten Hag to trial the duo alongside Cristiano Ronaldo in a triple-pronged attack.

Ronaldo has been off the boil this season but the 37-year-old’s display was still encouraging, especially when you consider his frustrated mood at present.

He pressed from the front, involving himself in the game despite United not always being able to create top chances for him to convert.

Ronaldo should, of course, have scored when his late effort struck the post – with the veteran just yards out at the time.

But his enterprising display was a stark contrast to the way Rashford performed at City up top at the weekend, with the 24-year-old anonymous that day.

Ronaldo, on another day, could have done a hat-trick with the former Juventus and Real Madrid star missing chances he used to score with ease.

The more he plays, the more likely he is to rediscover the goalscoring touch he’s had for so many years.

Ronaldo up top, with two speedy forwards alongside him, could hold the key to getting the best from the Portugal international.

And his two team-mates, certainly, did enough to show they’ve got what it takes to be regulars in Ten Hag’s team.

Many wrote Rashford off after his poor displays last term, where he toiled under Ole Gunnar Solskjaer and Ralf Rangnick.

But with five goals to his name this term, it’s fair to say the United star has bounced back in the best way possible.

And Martial is beginning to get his mojo back, with the France international a player reborn in the short time since Ten Hag’s appointment.

Antony also caught the eye for United, even if he was unable to score or assist.

But Jadon Sancho was poor for the second game running, with the England international hooked at half-time.

United can do a lot worse by trialling a front three of Ronaldo, Martial and Rashford.

The problem with the former just won’t go away and, only by playing him, can Ten Hag gleam what the veteran can truly offer the team.

Rashford, meanwhile, admitted United had to dig deep as they battled their way to a key European win.

“Job done, but we would have liked to have played better. We didn’t defend badly, but we made mistakes,” he said.

“The first 35 minutes until they scored we were playing well, we just could have got in behind them more.

“Then when he made the subs he [Erik ten Hag] wanted us to be more dynamic, take chances going forward and score goals.”

And, on Martial, he added: “He is a massive player for us, has been for a long time.

“When he is happy and at it he is an unbelievable player. We’ve both been injured, him longer than me, so it is good for him to get minutes and make an impact.”
