Manchester United had Leandro Paredes as one of their ‘secret options’ before signing Casemiro from Real Madrid instead, it has been claimed. The Brazil international moved to Old Trafford in a huge £60million deal back in the summer transfer window. However, he’s yet to make a single start for the Red Devils in the time since…
Manchester United had been hoping to sign Frenkie de Jong from Barcelona, with Erik ten Hag making his fellow Dutchman a priority target upon taking over at Old Trafford.
However, when it became clear the 25-year-old couldn’t be prised away from the Nou Camp, they then started to look at alternatives.
United considered a deal for Juventus’ Adrien Rabiot, before then proceeding to spend a massive £60m on Casemiro.
And Fabrizio Romano, speaking on his YouTube channel, has now revealed the Red Devils considered a deal for Paredes – who was strutting his stuff for Paris Saint-Germain at the time.
The Argentina international has since proceeded to join Juventus on loan.
Romano said: “Do you remember that week when Man United had many potential players on the list because of Adrien Rabiot?

“The deal collapsed with Juventus before signing Casemiro because at that point of the market Casemiro was still not available.
“Man United had a possibility and it was Leandro Paredes from Paris Saint-Germain.
“He was one of the players offered to Manchester United. They wanted to wait a bit in the market after missing out on Adrien Rabiot.
“They wanted to wait for Casemiro and in the end they signed Casemiro and they are super happy.
“But Paredes was one of the secret options offered to Man Utd. They decided not to proceed.
“Leandro Paredes always wanted Juventus this summer, he had an agreement on personal terms with Juventus and, at the end of the market, he joined Juve for a new Italian opportunity.”

Romano also elaborated on Tyrell Malacia, too, claiming the Netherlands international could have joined West Ham before moving to Old Trafford.
“Tyrell Malacia, discussing his hijacked deal. Do you remember it was almost done to Olympique Lyon, he was ready to fly on a Monday to join Lyon and have his medical.
“Then Manchester United hijacked the move and signed Tyrell Malacia, who is already an important player for Erik ten Hag at United,
“But what I can reveal is: the day after the deal between Lyon and Malacia, also West Ham – before signing Emerson Palmieri of course – tried to enter into the story for Tyrell Malacia.
“They had direct contact with the player’s side, then no agreement [between] Malacia and West Ham, he decided to go to Lyon.
“But Manchester United hijacked the deal and so changed the whole story for the Dutch left-back.”

Regarding Casemiro, he’s yet to start a match for United so far.
The Brazilian has been benched for recent matches against Southampton, Leicester and Arsenal.
And Danny Murphy thinks Scott McTominay is responsible for the 30-year-old’s absence, with the Scotland international currently thriving.
“In the last few games he’s kept Casemiro out of the team,” he said.
“I know it’s a winning run so he’s keeping the team the same, but I think he’s been outstanding.
“His desire to get back into defensive positions and help his defence, the amount of crosses he heads out, the amount of blocks he makes and the amount of runners he tracks, talk about doing a job for the team.

“Talk about putting a shift in. If anyone wants to think negatively about him, go and watch United’s last three games and watch him.”
And Murphy then added: “When you’re trying to keep your place in the United side and you’re trying to turn around a couple of losses early in the season, you want everybody at it.
“United fans will love his performances the last few games because he’s never going to be a Michael Carrick and have the elegance of someone like Carrick with two feet and playing out through the lines, from the back, that’s not what he does. But he’ll give everything to destroy and stop the opposition scoring.
“He’d be a nightmare to play against, the way he is at the minute. He looks full of energy, full of confidence.
“He’s got two ballers around him in [Bruno] Fernandes and [Christian] Eriksen who are doing the other stuff.
“At the moment it’s a great problem for Ten Hag and he deserves credit for leaving him in.”
