Manchester United defender Diogo Dalot has been ruled out of Saturday’s derby against Manchester City with Anthony Martial considered a major doubt.
Manchester United news, exclusives and analysis
Dalot returned from the World Cup with a hamstring injury but returned to the side for Tuesday’s Carabao Cup quarter-final win over Charlton.
The Portugal international was forced off after half an hour, however.
While Erik ten Hag insisted post-match the knock was ‘nothing serious’, he has ruled the right-back out this weekend.
In another concern, ten Hag revealed Martial has been carrying a leg injury and while the striker was able to train on Friday morning, the club will make a decision on his availability tomorrow morning.
‘I think Diogo Dalot is not available and Anthony Martial, he trained this morning so we have to wait to see how he recovers from this training and if he’s available. We will make the decision tomorrow,’ ten Hag told a press conference on Friday.
‘It is a small thing in his leg [with Martial] and, if he is not available for tomorrow, it will be Wednesday [at Crystal Palace].’
Dalot has enjoyed a superb campaign this term, becoming the manager’s first-choice option at right-back ahead of Aaron Wan-Bissaka.
The former Crystal Palace starlet however has provided a good account of himself in recent weeks, starting four of United’s six games since the end of the World Cup with the Portugal international recovering from a hamstring.
Wan-Bissaka would be expected to start in his place against Pep Guardiola’s side. Ten Hag could face a more pressing issue up front however if Martial is not deemed fit.
United have sought a short-term solution to their striker shortage and are expected to confirm a deal to sign Wout Weghorst on loan until the end of the season today.
The 30-year-old will not be registered in time to play against City, however.
Marcus Rashford has been in sensational form since the return of club football, scoring seven times in his last six appearances and could be shifted inside to play through the middle in Martial’s absence.
