Football Digest: Analysing Man Utd's failed recruitment
Manchester United have been very busy this summer already, having brought in Mason Mount, Andre Onana and Rasmus Hojlund for Erik ten Hag but there are still more additions expected before the transfer window closes on Friday, September 1. While those reinforcements could depend on exits that will be sealed this week, Express Sport has looked at five transfer deals that could be made before the deadline alongside Dean Henderson – who is closing in on a £20million move to Crystal Palace.
Harry Maguire exit
United thought they had been close to ending Harry Maguire’s time at the club, having been in advanced negotiations with West Ham regarding a £30m sale. However, those discussions broke down and the Hammers since moved on by landing Stuttgart centre-back Konstantinos Mavropanos.
The Sun have claimed that West Ham have since re-opened talks despite signing Mavropanos in what would be a major boost to the Red Devils’ finances. Jonny Evans being close to signing a one-year contract also may hint that United are close to selling Maguire, who could fund further signings.

Midfielder signing
Maguire’s funds could go directly to a midfielder addition, which has been sorely needed following Fred’s sale and Mount’s injury – while the middle of the pitch has been lacking balance, with Casemiro in need of someone to help him protect the defence.
Fiorentina’s Sofyan Amrabat could be that man, as he is training away from the Serie A side and awaits United’s offer. However, no bid has yet been made for the £25m-rated midfielder, though their pursuit could be sped up if Maguire makes way.
Ryan Gravenberch is another target, though United will have to compete with Liverpool for his signature and Bayern Munich are not yet open to selling their highly-rated youngster – Premier League sides may be forced to take him on loan as opposed to a permanent deal.

End Van de Beek’s misery
Donny Van de Beek has struggled to make the desired impact in his three years at Old Trafford and has found himself out of Ten Hag’s plans, with an exit likely on the cards after working with United to find a landing spot.
The Netherlands playmaker had been in talks with Real Sociedad, but those negotiations have since broken down and United have been forced to search for another team to take him on. Though Fabrizio Romano has claimed that clubs are expected to try for the 26-year-old this week.
Bayindir confirmation
With Dean Henderson set to seal a £20m move to Palace, United have identified Fenerbahce goalkeeper Altay Bayindir as his replacement for just over £4m, as he will come in as number two to Onana.
United will hope to get both deals over the line as soon as possible, in order to allow Bayindir to be named on the bench for their trip to Arsenal on Sunday in case there is any issue with their number one.
Left-back cover
Injuries to Luke Shaw and Tyrell Malacia have forced United to enter the market for a left-back at short notice, having deployed Diogo Dalot in that role during the comeback 3-2 win over Nottingham Forest on Saturday.
The Red Devils’ are looking for a loan deal according to reports, with the likes of Marcos Alonso, Marc Cucurella and Sergio Reguilon the names mentioned alongside free agent Ryan Bertrand – that addition could be the final signing to complete Ten Hag’s squad.
