Manchester United are reportedly set to make a move for highly rated AC Milan midfielder Frank Kessie next summer, should Paul Pogba depart on a free. Pogba’s current deal expires at the end of June meaning he can negotiate with other clubs from January onwards.

The 28-year-old has enjoyed a fantastic start to the season with United, which has seen him provide no fewer than seven Premier League assists already.

However, the Frenchman continues to be linked with a move away from Old Trafford, with Real Madrid, Mauricio Pochettino’s PSG and Juventus being tipped as potential destinations.

And now the Red Devils looked as if they have lined up an ideal replacement for Pogba, with Spanish newspaper Mundo Deportivo reporting that United could move for Kessie, who would also be available for nothing.

La Gazzetta dello Sport reported recently that the Ivory Coast midfielder refused to sign a new deal with the Italian giants, leading to further speculation about his future.

The Ivorian has been at Milan for the past five seasons and has helped turn their fortunes around, but it appears he now may be looking for a new challenge elsewhere.

But signing Kessie won’t be easy as a whole host of European football’s biggest names are reportedly set to battle one another for his signature.

Barcelona, PSG, Liverpool and Tottenham are all rumoured to be interested in the 24-year-old.

The Catalan giants have serious financial issues to contend with – which could prevent them from making a move – while PSG already bolstered their midfield in the summer by snapping up Georginio Wijnaldum from Liverpool.

Jurgen Klopp’s side never replaced the Dutch midfielder in the summer and thus they could be also be serious contenders to sign Kessie.

The latest developments come as a surprise given the fact that in July Kessie expressed his desire to remain at Milan forever.

“I’m proud to have chose Milan and it is not my intention to leave,” he told Gazzetta dello Sport.

“Indeed, I want to stay forever. I just want Milan. Sporting director Paolo Maldini knows my thoughts.

“I want to be the ‘President’ of Milan for life.”

Away from the Pogba saga, United continued their fantastic start to the new Premier League campaign on Sunday by beating West Ham 2-1 in dramatic fashion, thanks to a late winner from Jesse Lingard.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s side sit third in the table behind rivals Liverpool and Thomas Tuchel’s Chelsea on goal difference.
