Manchester United owners the Glazers have narrowed down their search for Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s successor to two names, according to reports. Solskjaer is under pressure for his position at Old Trafford following a run of one win in the club’s last six Premier League matches. The Red Devils have also had to rely on late goals from Cristiano Ronaldo in three of their four Champions League group stage matches to keep their hopes of qualifying for the knockout stages alive.

Solskjaer has seen his side suffer humiliating defeats to rivals Liverpool and Manchester City in the last two home league matches.

City only beat United 2-0 but the hosts failed to lay a glove on Pep Guardiola’s impressive outfit.

United were linked with appointing Antonio Conte last month before he was appointed the new Tottenham head coach.

But, speaking on Reach PLC’s Transfer Window podcast, Duncan Castles says Conte was never a realistic target for the Glazers.

United instead want a manager to continue the ‘cultural reboot’ they have deployed in recent seasons.

Castles says that has narrowed the search down to two names – Mauricio Pochettino and Brendan Rodgers.

Pochettino is currently in charge of Paris Saint-Germain, with Rodgers at Leicester.

Pochettino has been strongly linked with the United job in the past and is not thought to be settled in Paris.

Meanwhile, Rodgers is claimed to have a clause in his Leicester contract where he would be allowed to leave if a Champions League club came calling for his services.

Castles said: “They are putting out a message that they still believe in the cultural reboot, the kind of PR story that they’ve sold around Solskjaer.

“They therefore want a manager to fit that profile.

“I think that reduces down to most likely a couple of names, one of whom they’ve been interested in for a long time, Mauricio Pochettino, who may become available because he did not want to be at Paris Saint-Germain this summer, he was ready to go back to Tottenham.

“Paris Saint-Germain is obviously a very fragile situation for any coach.

“I can see why the Glazers are looking at the possibility that Pochettino might become available at some point during this season.

“Another name very prominent is Brendan Rodgers, who has a profile in terms of the kind of football he plays and development of youth that would appeal and fit with that cultural reboot idea and is interested in moving from Leicester at some point in the not too distant future to one of the top clubs in England.”
