Manchester United have jumped to the front of the queue in the race to sign Borussia Dortmund talisman Erling Haaland, according to reports. The 20-year-old, who has been heavily linked with Real Madrid and Manchester City for some time, is also believed to be on United’s radar ahead of next summer.

The Red Devils are already well-stocked at the top of the pitch, with Ole Gunnar Solskjaer having plenty of exciting options at his disposal.

The fairytale return of Cristiano Ronaldo is likely to see the mercurial 36-year-old lead the line for United over the next two years.

Meanwhile, the trio of Edinson Cavani, Mason Greenwood and Marcus Rashford are all more than capable of thriving in a striking role.

However, United are still being mentioned in connection with Haaland, who has scored 63 goals in 64 appearances for Dortmund since joining the club in January of last year.

It seems as though a move to Old Trafford could be the most likely outcome next summer, with Real Madrid and City falling behind in the battle for his signature.

United are now ‘in pole position’ for Haaland due to the Spanish giants and the Premier League champions deciding to pursue other avenues, according to ESPN.

Real Madrid are set to sign Kylian Mbappe on a free transfer ahead of next season and they will need to add reinforcements elsewhere if the Paris Saint-Germain striker joins the club.

Meanwhile, City are still determined to land Tottenham forward Harry Kane despite failing in their efforts over the summer.

They are not expected to move for Haaland as a result, leaving United as the favourites to complete his signing.

PSG and Bayern Munich have also been credited with an interest in the Dortmund star but the Red Devils have a number of advantages that could swing proceedings in their favour.

Haaland enjoys a strong relationship with Solskjaer and is said to remain close with former team-mate Jadon Sancho.

He is also a huge admirer of Ronaldo, with the latter’s presence at Old Trafford able to play a big role in shaping any potential move.

It remains to be seen whether United will eventually be able to sign Haaland next summer, with reports claiming that a £68million release clause written into his Dortmund contract will be active next summer.

The Bundesliga heavyweights stood firm in their stance against a move throughout the recent transfer window, with future sporting director Sebastian Kehl insisting that he was never worried about losing the player ahead of this season.

“There were a lot of rumours, a lot of discussions, but internally we were always clear with Erling, with his father, with [his agent] Mino Raiola,” Kehl told Viaplay.

“For that reason, we were always very calm. [Haaland]’s here, you can see him, he’s very motivated and very engaged, and he wants to play a great season for Borussia Dortmund.”
