Man Utd set to hand Martial ‘significant role’ after two things impress Ten Hag

Anthony Martial has been linked with a Manchester United exit for almost half his eight-year career at Old Trafford, having struggled to realise his meteoric potential as a £36million teenager. He has also been linked with a departure in the January transfer window, but any move looks set to wait until next summer.

Martial arrived in Manchester in 2015 as one of Europe’s most promising young forwards, having won the Golden Boy award in the same year.

But persistent injury woes have ultimately derailed his development across the past decade, scoring 89 goals in 308 United appearances.

He has been linked with a parting of the ways under Jose Mourinho, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer and now Erik ten Hag.

Rasmus Hojlund’s £72m summer arrival, pushing Martial down the pecking order, intensified expectations that the Frenchman’s Old Trafford career was nearing an end.

However, Ten Hag could hand him the opportunity to fight for his future in M16 beyond the winter transfer window.

According to GiveMeSport, Ten Hag is convinced Martial can play a significant role this season if United face as congested a fixture schedule as their 62-game 2022/23 season.

The 27-year-old’s diligence and commitment in training despite losing his place as a sure starter is said to have impressed his manager.

And Ten Hag is ready to hand Martial chances to make an impact before the turn of the year, potentially opening the door to extending his United journey.

Martial’s contract expires next summer, and it remains uncertain whether the Red Devils will trigger an extension as Ten Hag works to remove the deadwood from his ranks.

Aaron Wan-Bissaka and Victor Lindelof are in a similar situation, but the Dutchman wants to use the one-year extension option in their current deals, securing their futures until at least 2025.

Martial’s status is more up in the air, but Ten Hag looks set to hand him the opportunity to earn a contract extension or an attractive free transfer at the end of the campaign.

The United No 9 has started just three times this term, coming on as a late substitute in the last five Premier League and Champions League outings.

He is the only other natural striker beyond Hojlund at Ten Hag’s disposal, meaning a winter exit would call for the pursuit of a replacement.

But Martial looks increasingly likely to remain at United until next summer when there will be an important decision to make about where his future lies.
