Manchester United are reportedly working behind the scenes to find Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s successor amid intense pressure on the Norwegian during the international break. Spain manager Luis Enrique is one new name who has been added to the list, which includes the likes of Brendan Rodgers and Zinedine Zidane. Given his links with Spain and Barcelona, Express Sport looks at four signings Enrique could make if he is appointed before the January transfer window:

Frenkie de Jong

According to El Chiringuito, Barca star De Jong will be made available in January at the right price.

Central midfield is an area which many have called for United to improve over the coming months, with Fred and Scott McTominay struggling to keep strong opposition at bay.

At 24-years-old, De Jong is about to come into his prime, and he is already lauded as a footballer with a tremendous on-field IQ.

Taking the ball in tight spaces is also a specialty, and his adventurous passing could prove vital against top teams who like to press high.

Sergino Dest

Enrique could pull off a double raid on his former club Barcelona if Dest is enticed by the opportunity of heading to Old Trafford.

Club legend Dani Alves sealed his return to the Camp Nou last week to work under former team-mate Xavi, which could also hurt the 21-year-old’s game time.

The pacey USA international could be the perfect attacking alternative to Aaron Wan-Bissaka at right-back, something many figures involved with United have been calling for.

While his release clause with Barca is predictably extortionate, Enrique could use his healthy working relationship with the club to thrash out a more reasonable deal.

Dani Olmo

The 23-year-old midfielder has been a sensation since leaving Barcelona as a youngster, going on to Dinamo Zagreb before signing for RB Leipzig.

Since his re-entry into mainstream European football, he has starred for the Spanish national team, becoming one of their shining lights during a run to the Euro 2020 semi-final.

According to reports, a release clause in excess of £60million would be enough to prise him away from the Bundesliga, and Leipzig are notoriously open to doing business.

If Donny van de Beek seals a move away in January, Olmo could be the perfect replacement, albeit with greater prospects of game time under Enrique.

Franck Kessie

As the Ivorian’s contract stand-off bubbles on with AC Milan, practically every top club in Europe are positioning for a cut-price deal involving Kessie.

His leverage in the saga means big wages are likely to be on the table, but with the likes of Paul Pogba, David De Gea and Cristiano Ronaldo already on massive money, that should not be a problem.

Another candidate to fulfil United’s deficiency in the heart of midfield, Kessie has an all-round skill set as well as a developing eye for goal.

Last season, he struck 13 in Serie A alone, which is part of the reason why so many top clubs are chasing his services.
