Man Utd target Pau Torres leaves door open to move with Villarreal declaration

Manchester United transfer target Pau Torres has left the door open to move away from Villarreal in the future after revealing why he chose to stay this summer.

Both United and Tottenham Hotspur were linked with the Spain international centre-back in the summer after he impressed as Villarreal won the Europa League last season.

The Spanish side beat United on penalties after a 1-1 draw in Gdansk in May, with Torres catching the eye with his performances before also starring at the Euros.

However, despite rumours of strong Premier League interest, Torres did not move and started in the Champions League against United on Wednesday night.

The Red Devils opted to sign Raphael Varane from Real Madrid instead of pursuing a move for Torres, leaving the door open for Spurs.

However, despite Spurs being prepared to pay up to £52million for the 24-year-old according to El Confidencial, they also report that Torres turned down a move to north London.

As a result, Nuno Espirito Santo's side went on to sign Cristian Romero from Atalanta instead to boost their defensive options.

Torres has now explained his decision to stay at Villarreal this summer as he stated: "In the end, I was more interested in playing in the Champions League with my local team.

Will Pau Torres move to the Premier League next summer? Let us know in the comments section below.

"In a year when the national team has important challenges and, when you make changes, you don’t know how it will go.

"It was clear to me that it was a year to enjoy the Champions League with Villarreal, close to my family.

"It’s the fourth time Villarreal have played in the Champions League, and that’s what I was most looking forward to."

Torres joined Villarreal as a boy and made 44 appearances for the club last season as they qualified for the Champions League by winning the Europa League.

Unlike Villarreal, Spurs are not in Europe's premier club competition and are instead playing in the Europa Conference League this season.

If the Spanish club do not qualify for the Champions League again next season, though, expect a host of Europe's biggest clubs to take an interest in Torres next summer.
