Manchester United must not buckle and give Ralf Rangnick the job long term even if he has a successful end to the season, claim former England striker Darren Bent. Former Schalke and RB Leipzig boss Rangnick is set to be appointed the United interim boss for the remainder of the season. The German will then take up a consultancy role at Old Trafford.

United sacked Ole Gunnar Solskjaer last Sunday and stated they would look to appoint an interim manager.

Rangnick is the chosen candidate but will not take charge of the match at Chelsea on Sunday even if his appointment is announced.

The last time United appointed an interim manager was Solskjaer in December 2018.

Solskjaer was handed the reins full time but United went trophyless under the Norwegian.

Bent says he was taken by surprise by the Rangnick news after strong speculation that Mauricio Pochettino could leave Paris Saint-Germain mid-season to take the Red Devils job.

Bent said on talkSPORT: “[Rangnick]’s certainly got the pedigree in terms of, say he was to end the season from now really, really well, you finish comfortably in the top four, you somehow pick up a trophy somewhere.

“He’s obviously got the credentials to maybe go on and potentially become their permanent manager.

“If he doesn’t and he goes onto the board, then fair enough, but it’s one of them where it’s completely taken me by surprise.

“They spoke about Pochettino all week. Obviously it’s evident that that wasn’t going to happen. Michael Carrick, he probably wasn’t ever going to get the job.

“I thought it would be a lot easier than it has been in terms of Manchester United Football Club.

“They’re one of the biggest clubs in the world, they can attract pretty much who they want.

“But at least they’ve got someone who knows what they’re doing.”

Bent says appointing Rangnick is not a gamble from United, despite his lack of experience managing in England.

However, he says it would be wrong for United to appoint him long term if he does well between now and next summer.

Bent compared the situation to when Rafa Benitez was let go by Chelsea despite leading them to the Europa League in 2013.

Bent added: “It’s not really a risk is it in terms of yeah, we know he’s not managed in this country before, but he has been a proven manager so it’s not really a risk.

“It’s a little bit like when Chelsea had that interim period, brought in Rafa Benitez, he won the Europa League.

“But after one year they were like ‘thank you, but no more’.

“Manchester United are going to have to be brave. If this guy is not the right guy to take them forward, regardless of what he does from now until the end of the season, if he’s not the guy they visualise in two or three years, he’s going to have to go no matter what he does.”
